Today I am thrilled to be sharing my review of The Third Mrs Durst by Ann Aguirre. Happy publication day Ann.

About the Book

Some people just need killing.

Marlena Altizer Durst lives in her husband’s shadow. He controls her every move—what she wears, the food she eats, and the friends she’s allowed to make. If she disobeys, there are…consequences. And he has all the power.

To outsiders, it seems that she leads a fairy-tale life. But nobody ever wonders if Cinderella was happy after she married the prince. Marlena has traded freedom and safety for luxurious imprisonment, and most days, that seems like a bad bargain. Death may be the only exit she’s allowed. Just like his first wife. And his second. Unless she flips the script.

Wow this is one deliciously twisted story! I was gripped right from the start and was completely caught up in the drama of it all. It is a very chilling and intense read, that at times is quite confronting with very graphic scenes of physical abuse, which is a trigger warning to readers that are sensitive to this, but at the same time is also very compelling.

The plot of this book spins a twist on a tale that you may have read before, but what makes this one stand out above the rest, is the power of revenge and the lengths a person will go to get it, even if it could cost them their own life. This is definitely a story where you won’t find a happy ever after, but you will walk away with a feeling of satisifaction. After all “Some people just need killing”…. (A brilliant tagline by the way!)

Right from the start I absolutely detested the character of Michael Durst and think he is one of the most despicable inhumane characters that I have ever read and he has shot straight up to the top of my top 5 most unlikeable characters of all time! Ann has written him to perfection as the villainous sociopath/psychopath.

For me, Marlena is a very relatable and believable character. Even though she is put through the ringer and at times in the most horrific of ways, I admired her strength and determination throughout. You definitely would want her as a friend and not as an enemy!

I also enjoyed the character of Joanna Van Houten and liked how I was kept guessing if her intentions came from a place of good or bad and I was not disappointed with the outcome there.

I really enjoyed Ann’s writing style. Even though at times it can be an uncomfortable read, Ann has nailed making the reader feel tension throughout and know how to make ones heart pound waiting to see where it was all going to go next. This is an addictive thrilling read which I highly recommend.

This is the first book that I have read from Ann. She is definitely one that I will be looking out for in the thriller genre in the future.

Thank-you to NetGalley, Midnight Ink Books and Ann Aguirre for allowing me to read an advance copy of The Third Mrs Durst which I have review honestly and voluntarily.
