Sometimes the lie is safer than the truth.
Fran made the biggest mistake of her life when she had an affair with Ben. Both families live in the village of Oakheart; their children are friends. Fran’s guilt shadows her days. But it’s no more than she deserves, or is it? At least she’s managed to protect her husband, Hector, from the harsh truth.
But for how long?
Tessa has left her troubles in the past and now has the perfect life. Ben might have his faults, but his life has not been easy. They need each other, and Tessa will do whatever it takes to eliminate any threats to her marriage.
Threats from women like Fran.
A cliff overlooks a disused chalk-pit. The locals call it High Heaven. It’s a place of secrets. And it’s where Oakheart newcomer Maria died. When Fran discovers a link between Maria and Ben, disturbing questions arise to which she has no way of knowing the answers.
Faced with an ultimatum from Tessa, time is running out for Fran. She’s scared, every minute of every day.
But where does the real danger lie?

The Wife’s Revenge has it all! Secrets, betrayal, lies and revenge that is all tied up in a mystery that will have you guessing and racing through the pages well into the night to solve. Right from the get go, I was hooked and I couldn’t read this fast enough to see how it was all going to unfold. I was not disappointed.
Deirdre has crafted a tightly woven, well thought out twisted plot that is told through alternating chapters, between the two main players Tessa and Fran. What’s interesting about this book, is you know right from the get go Tessa’s intentions for revenge against Fran for her part in an affair with her husband Ben, but there is the added mystery of happened to Maria though which does keeps you guessing until the end.
The characters in this story, though not all likeable have been written extremely well in the roles that they play. They are well developed and have been brought to life perfectly within the pages.
This is the first book I have read from Deirdre. I really enjoyed her writing style which is both fluid and engaging. Right from the start I was enthralled from the opening paragraph.
If this was a film or television drama, this is the moment when there would be a blood -freezing scream, or an air splitting yell. At the very least, a short jagged cry. The sound, whichever form it takes, would collide with the rockface and fling its echo around the valley. But there is no echo, because there is no sound…..
Each scene is told through writing that is perfect in it’s descriptive detail, so much so that Deirdre makes you feel that you are part of the story watching from the sidelines as it all unfolds. It is a slow burn, but the tension and the ominous vibe that is used throughout keeps your attention in the lead up to the thrilling conclusion.
As a first foray in the psychological suspense genre, Deirdre has done an amazing job and I can’t wait to read what she comes up with next. It has been an absolute pleasure to read and review The Wife’s Revenge which I highly recommend.
Thank-you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources and to Deirdre Palmer for my advanced copy of The Wife’s Revenge which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
About Deirdre Palmer
I live in Brighton with my husband and a tabby cat called Chester. After a career in public sector admin, most recently at the University of Brighton, it was time to stop dreaming about being a writer and actually do something about it!
Fast forward to the present, and now I’m both traditionally
published and self-published, with five women’s fiction novels under my own name, and five ‘cosy’ reads, writing as Zara Thorne.
I’ve also published a book of short stories, most of which were previously published in The People’s Friend magazine. ‘The Wife’s Revenge’ is my first foray into the psychological suspense genre.
