From the bestselling author of Sweet Tea Tuesdays comes a story of true love that spans decades.
Lillian Alexander’s father is dying of cancer. When he rambles on in a morphine-delirium, Lillian can’t ignore the feeling he’s trying to tell her something. At his funeral days later, she encounters ghosts from her past who stir long-suppressed memories from the day her mother died twenty-seven years ago. Why, if her mother’s death was an accident, does Lillian harbor guilt, as though she were somehow to blame?
When Lillian and her twin sister, Layla, learn the Stoney family fortune is gone, Lillian fights to save her ancestral home on Charleston’s prestigious East Battery. Desperate to resolve her money problems and get answers to her questions about the past, she tears her father’s study apart in search of clues. She discovers a thumb drive in a hollowed-out hardback copy of For Whom the Bell Tolls. The thumb drive, marked For Lillian in his handwriting, contains her father’s memoir. Secluded in the family’s cottage on Wadmalaw Island, she immerses herself in her father’s account of his stormy relationship with her mother. What she learns sets her on a journey of self-discovery.
Tangled in Ivy is a tale of tortured souls and southern family dysfunction.
To be completely honest up front, this book drew me in from just its cover alone. I didn’t even read the blurb when I saw it on NetGalley, I was that mesmerised and taken by it. I just knew that I had to request and read this book and my instinct was right. Oh my goodness what a spectacular read this is.
Ashley has crafted a plot that is full of family drama, hidden secrets, intrigue and romance which pulls you in right from the get go. Ashley takes you along for the ride and she transports you into it’s world, which you can’t escape from until its final page. I was so entranced, I was surprised when it came to the end, as it felt like no time had passed at all.
There is a great cast of characters that are real, relatable and have been perfectly created and brought to life so beautifully. They are a diverse bunch and they all step up and play out their role extremely well. There were many standouts amongst the bunch, but my personal favourite was loveable housekeeper Trudy.
I really liked how the book was structured and how it moves from past to present and told from different points of view. There are also some twists and turns to mix it up and while you think you have outsmarted Ashley by figuring it out, in she comes with a curve ball, which takes you by surprise and didn’t see it coming at all!
This is the first book of Ashley’s I have read and I was completely blown away by it. I was immediately taken in by her emotive and vivid writing, that takes you wholeheartedly into the story and has you feeling every part of it. A fantastic storyteller I am so pleased to have been introduced to her work and I look forward to more books in the future. It was an absolute pleasure to read and review Tangled In Ivy which I highly recommend.
