Other Deadly Delights – Tales from the psychotically unsound and deadly deluded. A stalker turns serial killer; a cleaning lady is imprisoned in the basement, there’s a prophetic warning for a woman in peril, and an android with love addiction, plus many more… a deliciously dangerous collection of short stories, ranging from psychological horror to paranormal, sci-fi and noir.
Dare you enter the nightmare Asylum?
After I had finished watching a great documentary on one of my favourite directors Alfred Hitchcock, it was time for me to get settled in and start this book. What I realised quite quickly, was how this documentary fitted in so well in this book’s tone and how these short stories Sonia has created (albeit more sinister and creepy) reminded me of the TV show Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Even as I started each story, I had the theme music of the show playing around in my head as the introduction!
To go with the vibe of the book and completely immerse myself in the experience of reading it, the lights were turned off, candles were lit and the sounds of a thunderstorm through a speaker rounded out the ambience I had set. After reading the first story, which completely freaked me out but was brilliant, the candles were blown out and every light in my unit was turned on, but to save face I did keep the thunderstorm sounds on!
This collection of 18 short stories, will have you glued to the pages where Sonia takes you through a funhouse of horrors as she delves deep into her delightfully wicked mind to give the reader some of the most dark, intense, creepy, twisted, terrifying and disturbing stories you will ever read! With each story I was on edge, not helped by my two golden retrievers barking right when something was going to happen, but with my heart pounding I was compelled to keep reading and I devoured them all in one sitting.
I have read short stories before and have been left disappointed and underwhelmed with how they were put together, but with these ones, Sonia packs so much into them you don’t know how she does it. I mean some are only a couple of pages long! It takes a very skilful author to do this and Sonia does it in spades.
This is my first book I have read from Sonia and it will not be my last. I was really impressed with her writing and execution of this book and I look forward to reading more from her in the future. If you are looking for a quick read and love stories that fall in the genres of horror, supernatural, paranormal, psychological horror, noir and science fiction, then this is the book for you. It was a pleasure to read Nightmare Asylum and Other Deadly Delights which I highly recommend.
My thanks to Sonia for reaching out to me to review this book and for providing me with a free copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
This review will be added to, Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, Amazon Australia & Amazon US. I will also add to NetGalley, Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play, Barnes and Noble & Waterstones if available. As I am from Australia, unfortunately, I am unable to
add to Amazon UK.
