Deadly Wishes

Meet Zoe Finch, West Midlands Police’s newest Detective Inspector. She’s outspoken, ambitious, and damaged. And she’s working a case that could make her career, or cost her everything…

Fresh from the success of the Canary investigation into depravity and corruption at the highest levels, Zoe has attracted attention. Not least from Assistant Chief Constable Bryn Jackson.

But when Jackson is brutally murdered on the night of his retirement party, Zoe is dragged into a case that’s deeply personal.

All the evidence points to the victim’s downtrodden wife, who has secrets of her own. But Zoe begins to suspect all isn’t as it seems. Could Jackson’s death be linked to the Canary case? And what is her new boss, DCI David Randle, hiding?

Seeking out the truth will force Zoe to confront her own past and put her career, and her team’s lives, on the line.

Deadly Wishes is a gritty crime thriller perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Caroline Mitchell, and the BBC’s Line of Duty.

Deadly Wishes is the first book in a brand new series featuring Detective Zoe Finch and is one that has gotten off to a very promising start. An addictive crime thriller Rachel has crafted a very thrilling read that will have you glued to its pages and completely immersed in the story.

The story follows Zoe Finch as she becomes embroiled in a very personal case when Assistant Chief Constable Bryn Jackson is brutally murdered on the night of his retirement party. With evidence all leading to Jackson’s wife as his murderer, Zoe soon comes to realise that nothing is as it seems and the deeper her and her team get involved in the case and the more they uncover, puts all of their lives in danger.

The cast of characters that Rachel has assembled are a diverse bunch and with secrets to hide, has you second guessing them all at some point throughout the story. Rachel has really done a great job in creating Zoe and she is what I like to call perfectly imperfect. She is everything the blurb suggests of being outspoken, ambitious and damaged, but also from my own observations is a force to be reckoned with and I can see as her character develops over the course of the series she will definitely become one of my favourite female leads in a series.

Rachel is a new author to me and I was really taken in with this story, which is a testament to her writing skills. The story moves at a fast pace with little bombs dropped off along the way to tease you and twists and turns aplenty to take you off the track of how you think it is all going to unfold. For me it was also a story inclusive of the reader as it had me feeling like I was also part of the action working by Rachel and her teams side. I just love it when this happens in a book and it really impresses me when an author is able to do this.

Deadly Wishes ticks all of the boxes and really is a superb read. It deals with a more seedier and corruptive side of the police force which I find so interesting and fascinating. As I mentioned at the start of this review, it really is a promising start to the series and I will be eagerly awaiting the next instalment ,while also checking out Rachel’s other books. It was a pleasure to read and review Deadly Wishes which I highly recommend.

This review will be added to, Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, Amazon Australia & Amazon US. I will also add to NetGalley, Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play, Barnes & Noble & Waterstones if available. As I am from Australia, I am unable to add to Amazon UK.
