How well do you know your daughter?

Grace is living through every mother’s worst nightmare. Her student daughter Abi went away on a dream vacation to South Africa – and was murdered.
Overwhelmed by grief, and fighting off old demons which have resurfaced, Grace tries to make sense of it – who would want to kill her beautiful girl?
But as she learns more about Abi’s life in the UK, she realises she didn’t know her own daughter very well. How did Abi acquire all those designer clothes? And what was she doing on those mysterious trips to London?
Grace desperately needs to find answers. But soon it becomes clear that someone doesn’t want her digging into Abi’s secret past. Someone who knows how to use Grace’s own weaknesses against her, sending her on a journey to the darkest hell…

As I shut off the Kindle after finishing The Arrangement, I was mentally exhausted and just felt an overwhelming sadness. Not because the book was bad, far from it, it was because through Miranda Rijks‘ writing and the skilled way she pulls you into the world that she has created, you actually feel like you are inside the main protagonists head experiencing the story as they do.

The Arrangement is a story of loss, lies, secrets, deceit and a mother’s obsession in finding out what really happened the night her daughter was murdered. As much as this is every parents worse nightmare, it would also be a big blow to find out that their child also has a secret life that they knew nothing about and how this secret life could have contributed to their death in some way.

The character of Grace was the standout for me and she has been beautifully created and written. She has brought her to life so realistically and she just breaks your heart. There are some gut wrenching moments as she spirals and loses control in her grief, which has a past demon rearing it’s ugly head, but it is her tenacity as she continues to seek out the truth, when everyone else has just accepted her daughters death as a tragically random attack, that really does prove that there is nothing stronger than a mothers love for their child.

Grief is such a complex emotion and Miranda Rijks does a great job at showing how it effects the other characters so differently. For Grace, it just consumes her and at times it was hard to read. I also found it interesting how those around Grace treated her after, whether it was via avoidance or on the flip side compassion and how these two things made Grace feel.

There is a quote from the book that really stood out to me that sums up the compassion piece perfectly “Sometimes kindness can be as blindsiding as grief”. From my own personal experience with grief, I never thought of someone’s kindness that way, but after reading these words and although you appreciate it, it really can make you feel that way.

Miranda Rijks has definitely upped the ante with this book and in my view, the result is her best work yet! Everything in this story is on point. A strong plot, an opening that grabs your attention, a range of diverse and very well developed characters, shocking revelations and a satisfying ending that all comes together in spectacular fashion.

The Arrangement really is an outstanding piece of work which I congratulate you on Miranda. It really did touch me and I was not expecting it to get under my skin and effect me as much as it has. It was an absolute pleasure to read and review The Arrangement which I highly recommend.
