Two women. One office. A fight to the death.
Laura has sacrificed a lot for her high-powered career – her marriage, the chance to have kids. Now, finally, she’s in line for a big jump up the corporate ladder – all the way to the boardroom.
But there’s a fly in the ointment in the shape of beautiful Vanessa, a lowly assistant who seems to have it in for Laura.
Vanessa is PA to Hank, the most powerful executive in the company, a man whose support Laura desperately needs if she is to secure the job of her dreams. Repelled by Laura’s naked ambition, fiercely possessive of her boss, Vanessa deliberately sabotages Laura’s every attempt to make a good impression on Hank.
Laura threatens and cajoles but Vanessa just won’t play fair. Soon their mutual dislike escalates to an all-out war.
But career-obsessed Laura has always been willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead. And if Vanessa stands in her way… she’s going to pay the ultimate price.
The stunning psychological thriller from the author of The Guest.
Cathryn Grant has produced another winner here with The Assistant, which I throughly enjoyed. It is gripping, intense, a real page turner and is everything that I love in a psychological thriller, making it such an enjoyable read.
Cathryn Grant has created a plot that delves into office rivalry, politics and the lengths one will go to in getting to the top of the corporate ladder. Coming from a workplace where I have seen this first hand, although not as far as Cathryn Grant takes it, makes me glad that I am no longer part of that world.
The characters have been very well created, but not one is likeable. I actually enjoyed this and it gives the story an edge, but I did find them very intriguing. Cathryn Grant really gets into the heads of the main protagonists and shows us how differently they view the same situations and how it messes with their mental state.
The story has been very well executed and alternates from the perspectives of Vanessa and Laura, which gives the reader a good insight into their personalities and what they deal with outside of the workplace. It becomes quite dark and sinister as it progresses along and does have a shocking twist which I wasn’t expecting.
Cathryn Grant has become a fixture on my blog with The Assistant being the third book of hers that I have reviewed this year. She is a great storyteller and the books I have read, have all been so enjoyable. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with for us next. It was a pleasure to read and review The Assistant which I recommend.
Thank you to Cathryn Grant and Booksprout for allowing me to read an advanced copy of The Assistant, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
This review will be added to, Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, Amazon Australia & Amazon US. I will also add to NetGalley, Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play, Barnes & Noble & Waterstones if available. As I am from Australia, I am unable to add to Amazon UK.
