She offered them a place to stay. They wanted so much more.
Hannah’s life is almost perfect. She’s a full-time mother to two young children and married to successful cardiologist Daniel.
The only thing missing is a project of her own. So she has poured heart and soul into converting their stone barn into a beautiful holiday rental.
Things take a dark turn when visitors Mike and Nadia come to stay. They are noisy, dirty and disrespectful. Hannah is incensed by their behaviour, worried they may wreck her lovingly restored barn.
But she gradually realises that property damage is the least of her worries. Nadia and Mike aren’t here just for a holiday – they have a deeper, darker purpose, one that threatens to destroy Hannah’s entire life.
Spiralling into a nightmare that grows worse with each passing day, Hannah has to find the courage to fight back. But Mike and Nadia are clever and ruthless and they know something that Hannah doesn’t – a shocking secret from the past…
After the conversion of her barn into a holiday rental, Hannah can’t wait for her new guests to arrive. But little does she know, that her new guests are going to become her worst nightmare…
This story is also my worst nightmare and exactly why I could never do what Hannah and others in the real world do by owning anything of this nature. My anxiety is at a all time high as it is, let alone dealing with unsavoury guests!
And how unsavoury they are! Miranda Rijks has created the worst kind in Nadia and Mike, who is just so vile! Nothing that Hannah does is good enough for him and I wanted to reach into my Kindle and smack him one. Basically put, they trash the place and are so disrespectful to Hannah.
As the story progressed, so did my sympathy for Hannah. While dealing with her nightmare guests, she also is dealing with a passive aggressive husband and as the cracks start to appear, there were so many times I just wanted her to stand up, regain control and take back her power over both situations.
The Visitors is a dark and twisty tale that Miranda Rijks has perfectly plotted and executed. This book is so much more than what the blurb suggests and when it really gets down to it and motivations are revealed, makes for a thrilling build up to its outcome.
I love Miranda Rijks books and she has delivered another cracking read with The Visitors. She is now on my list of favourite authors in the psychological thriller genre and I will be eagerly awaiting to read what she will come up with for her readers next.
Thank you to Miranda Rijks, Inkubator Books, Netgalley and BookSprout for allowing me to read an advanced copy of The Visitors, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
This review will be added to, Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, Amazon Australia & Amazon US. I will also add to NetGalley, Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play and Barnes & Noble if available. As I am from Australia, I am unable to add to Amazon UK, but will post to Waterstones & Foyles if also available.
